Actor uniting the research community

Founded in 1899, the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV) is one of the oldest research communities in Finland. As members, it has more than 300 learned societies and four academies of sciences, representing a wide range of disciplines.

TSV’s funding

TSV’s funding is mainly based on discretionary government transfers, which it applies for from the Ministry of Education and Culture every year. The grants promote the scientific policy objectives defined in the state budget.

In 2025, the general grant to TSV totalled EUR 4.3 million. It also included the operating grants for the advisory boards operating alongside TSV, the Committee for Public Information (TJNK) and the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK). TSV manages all transfers granted by the Ministry to TSV.

In addition, TSV forwards the special grants allocated by the Ministry of Education and Culture. In 2025, EUR 1,220,000 was allocated for the publishing and international activities of scientific societies. EUR 100,000 was allocated for organising international conferences and national seminars in the sports sector. TJNK distributes grants and manages the State Awards for Public Information.

TSV also earns revenue of its own, which in 2025 amounted to approximately EUR 400,000. It derives from sources such as publications made by member societies sold through the Bookstore Tiedekirja and from renting the facilities of the House of Science and Letters. International EU projects diversify TSV’s funding base.

With the help of the funding, TSV performs common tasks of the research community and supports the activities of scientific societies.

The annual general meeting

The highest decision-making body of TSV is the annual general meeting, consisting of member communities, which assembles for annual meetings held twice a year. The spring meeting makes the decisions on accepting new member societies and confirms the previous year’s annual report and financial statement. The autumn meeting elects new board members to replace those in turn to resign and approves the management plan and budget for the following year.

The Board and its bodies

TSV’s operations are steered by the Board elected by the member communities. The Board is tasked with outlining activities, making decisions and ensuring that TSV fulfils its mission as an actor uniting the Finnish research community.

The decision-making bodies of the Board are the working committee and the Grants Committee.
