Open Science Coordination in Finland (AVOTT)

Open Science Coordination in Finland is based on extensive collaboration. Its aim is to develop open science practices together with the entire research community. The coordination brings together researchers, experts, higher education institutions, research organisations and other members of the research community to promote and develop open science.

How Open Science Coordination in Finland is organised

The promotion of open science and research is based on collaboration between the steering group, expert panels and the secretariat. Below, you can learn more about their roles in the coordination.

The Steering Group sets the direction

The National Open Science and Research Steering Group brings together key stakeholders in the Finnish research community. It sets the national direction for open science and supports collaboration within the research community.

Expert panels carry out practical development work

Open science is developed through expert panels whose work draws on the expertise and experience of their members. The panels include experts from different organisations and research disciplines, each contributing their own perspective to the shared work. Everyone working in or interested in open science is welcome to join the expert panels.

There are four expert panels:

  1. Culture of Open Scholarship
The panel examines how openness is reflected in the practices and structures of the research community and explores societal engagement.
  2. Open Access to Scholarly Publications
The panel promotes open access to scholarly publications.
  3. Open Research Data
The panel develops practices for opening up and sharing research outputs, such as research data and methods.
  4. Open Education
The panel focuses on open educational resources and openness in education.

Expert panels establish working groups

Expert panels may establish working groups whose objectives include peer support, discussion, networking and the development of national open science policies and recommendations. The working groups meet online approximately six to eight times a year.

The Secretariat supports and coordinates the work

The practical work of Open Science Coordination in Finland is supported by the Open Science Secretariat. The Secretariat organises events and communicates current developments in open science. It is also responsible for national open science monitoring and maintains connections with international expert networks in open science.

Open science conference

Open Science Coordination in Finland organises Open Science Conferences annually in collaboration with research organisations.

The event brings together open science experts, researchers and representatives of research organisations. The program includes presentations for all participants, meetings of working groups and expert panels, and potentially workshops.

Open science awards

Open Science Coordination in Finland presents annual awards recognising the impact of open science and research and acknowledging individuals and organisations that promote and develop openness.

Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • Open Science Makes an Impact
  • Open Science Enabler
  • Open Science Ambassador

International collaboration in open science

Open science is built through international collaboration. TSV participates in European and global networks that develop open science practices, infrastructures and shared policies.
International collaboration provides the Finnish research community with new solutions and strengthens Finland's role in developing open science.

Developing policies and practices

The Council of National Open Science Coordination (CoNOSC) is a European network of national open science coordination. It supports the development of national open science policies and the exchange of experiences. We are part of this international open science network and work together to advance openness in science.

Investigating the impact of open science

The Global Research Initiative on Open Science (GRIOS) brings together research evidence on open science and supports the international development of open science strategies. We participate in international collaboration to investigate the impact of open science.

Interoperability of research data services

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) develops European research data infrastructure in accordance with the FAIR principles. EOSC supports the sharing, preservation and reuse of research data.

Citizen science and sharing experiences

The European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) promotes citizen science and supports engagement between research and society at the European level. We actively participate in international citizen science activities and serve as a link between the international and Finnish citizen science communities.
