Opening science

Democracy and an educated society depend on research-based knowledge. It is therefore important that research-based knowledge is available and accessible to everyone as easily and clearly as possible, including in Finland's national languages.
Koristeellinen.

Why is open science important?

When reliable research-based knowledge is readily available, it is easier to use in everyday life, in addressing societal challenges and in political decision-making. Accessibility of knowledge promotes equality and strengthens public trust in science and research.

Making science accessible to everyone is a topical issue in both the Finnish and international research communities. In recent years, the research community has developed shared open science policies, platforms and networks, as well as events that inspire curiosity among the wider public interested in science. The quality and impact of science and research are strengthened when research outputs and methods are openly available for examination and reuse.

One of the key responsibilities of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV) is to make research-based knowledge accessible to everyone. A large number of researchers and other members of the research community contribute to this work.

What does open science mean in practice?

Openness takes many forms in everyday research activities. Examples include:

  • scientific publications that are openly available online free of charge, also referred to as diamond open access publishing
  • open educational resources that anyone can use and share
  • transparent research methods and processes
  • collaboration between the research community and wider society

How does TSV promote open science?

TSV promotes openness in research-based knowledge by:

  • developing open access to scientific publications and publishing platforms that allow anyone to read scientific publications online
  • organising science events that are open to everyone
  • coordinating national open science and research development
  • participating in international collaboration
  • promoting multilingualism in science

Open Science Coordination in Finland

TSV coordinates the national development of open science in Finland in collaboration with the research community. This national collaboration produces shared policies, recommendations and operating models that support the implementation of open science across the research community.

National coordination helps ensure that open science practices develop consistently and sustainably throughout the research community, while universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutes and other research organisations guide their own practices, including research data management, publishing and guidelines on openness.

International collaboration on opening science

Open science is built through international collaboration. TSV actively participates in European and international projects that develop practices for open access publishing, research data and research infrastructures.

Multilingualism

The signatories of the Helsinki Initiative on Multilingualism in Scholarly Communication advocate that policymakers, universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutes, research funders, libraries and researchers support the dissemination of research findings, maintain national infrastructures that enable research publishing and promote linguistic diversity in research. TSV contributed to the preparation of the Helsinki Initiative on Multilingualism in Scholarly Communication.

Events

The Science Forum and the Night of Science bring research and researchers closer to the public. These events make science more accessible, strengthen dialogue between science and society, and provide opportunities to explore current research.
