By integrating information such as organisational type, journal affiliations and geographical location, DoLS also improves the discoverability of learned society journals. In addition, it supports research on scholarly communities and their contribution to the production, communication and impact of knowledge across the arts and sciences.
Why DoLS?
Learned societies play a central role in advancing research, scholarly publishing and scientific communities. Despite their importance, information about learned societies has long been scattered across different national and international sources.
By bringing this information together, DoLS makes learned societies more visible and easier to discover for researchers, publishers, funders and research infrastructures.
What is a learned society?
Learned societies - voluntary non-profit organizations involving academics - have existed since the 17th century for the advancement of scholarship, research, disciplines, publishing and public understanding of science. In English-language literature, a learned society can also be referred to as a scholarly, scientific or professional society or association.
What does DoLS include?
DoLS brings together information on learned societies from around the world in one openly available directory. Directory entries may include organisational type, geographical scope, journal affiliations and links to external identifiers such as ROR.

The directory is managed by a Management Committee, which oversees its quality, accuracy and relevance. In the future, the committee will be supported by an international advisory council.
