This is how the publication exchange works
As part of the international publication exchange, Finnish scholarly publications are delivered to foreign partners, who send their publications to Finland in return. The Exchange Centre for Scientific Literature sends the publications on to Finnish scientific libraries. The Exchange Centre maintains exchange relationships and takes care of the practical arrangements of the exchanges.
The Exchange Centre’s partners in Finland include organisations publishing scholarly series and journals as well as scientific libraries. Foreign partners include research institutes, libraries, learned societies, editors of scholarly journals and university units. The publication exchange is based on extensive cooperation networks. This gives Finnish libraries access to a wide range of foreign scholarly publications.
An increasing share of scholarly publications is available online. However, the publication exchange continues to complement the collections of scientific libraries, maintains international cooperation networks, and helps to distribute publications that are not easily accessible through other channels.
For publishers
Learned societies and other publishing organisations can arrange for the Exchange Centre for Scientific Literature to manage their international publication exchanges. The service includes maintaining exchange relationships, delivering publications to foreign partners, and the practical arrangements of the exchanges.
Publishers can also access statistics on exchange activities, express their wishes concerning publications to be obtained, and influence the library that houses the material received in return.
For libraries
The Exchange Centre for Scientific Literature makes foreign scholarly publications available to Finnish libraries. Libraries can monitor the arrival of publications, browse the available publications and report any missing material.
Keep track of publications arriving in your library
The Exchange Centre monitors the arrival of all exchange publications in its database. Libraries can check this database to see which publication series are delivered to them and what the most recently received issue is. You can search for this information either by publication series or by the library housing the material.

If a publication is missing
If an exchange publication or its issue does not arrive in the library, the Exchange Centre will contact the exchange partner to request the missing material. The library can also notify the Exchange Centre if it notices that a publication is missing.

Publication exchanges for over 250 years
The exchange of scientific publications in Finland goes back to about 1750. For decades, the exchange of publications was a key way of building up the collections of scientific libraries and establishing international connections between the Finnish research community and foreign partners. While web publishing and open access has changed scholarly publishing dramatically, the demand for international publication exchanges has continued.
